Training Gun Dogs In The HeatWith the heat index raging above 100 for the last 3 weeks. Gun dog training can become very difficult.
I get started very early in the mornings with the obedience and force work dogs in the yard. Then once all that is done we
have to get to the field with all the transition gun dogs (pattern blinds, etc.) Then we turn around and run a series of marks.
We are always parking in the shade to try and keep the dogs cooler. From there we try and go run another series of water marks
to end the day in the field. Then we put all the dogs in their kennels, turn on the misters, and sit for the rest of the afternoon.
Right before dark we are teaching young dogs to handle on the T and double T. After dark we feed and call it a day. This heat
sure does take a toll on everyone, mostly the dogs. I just want all of you to make sure your dogs are well taken care of.
It only takes a couple minutes for your hunting partner to go down. Just make sure you always have fresh water in front of
him.
